WINDINGS

Windings released a gem of a debut album back in 2005 with 14 songs which range widely from lo-fi acoustic to warm fuzz guitar, but at all times holding true to great pop melodies, soft vocals and often touchingly honest lyrics.

'Surrounded', 'Bubbles' and 'Cathedrals' to mention just three compare very well to the best Belle & Sebastian have produced, while 'God Knows' and 'Princess' are really superb indie guitar tunes whose fuzzy sound reminds me quite a lot of Dinosaur Jr in their more heart reaching moments. Another track, 'To Follow', has a somewhat folk feel to it and almost seems like a slowed down, slightly psychedelic reversal on Bob Dylan's 'It Ain't Me, Babe' - although not enough to know for sure whether it alludes to it or just has a coincidental similarity, but in any case demonstrates the variety of styles brushed against by Windings on this album. All interspersed with some quite beautiful instrumental moments, including a very Sigur Ros sounding opener, the album has an intriguing appeal from start to finish.

Both 'God Knows' and 'Bubbles' can be streamed from the Windings myspace, and the album can be purchased online from Road Records.
